Paper Hat Series

A collection of unconventional hats inspired by my Great Aunt, who owned a hat shop between the 1940-1950's in Detroit, Michigan.

Lady in Black

This series of hats were inspired by my Great Aunt's signature black hats, and a nod to her flamboyant style.

I focused on two styles for the first collection—Both styles feature intricate details with a modern twist. The goal was to make the paper hats from unconventional materials, but functional:

  • Wide Brim Hat

  • Straw Ladies Hat

In the Lady in Black series, I created two hats from cardboard,
paper scraps, and black spray paint.
After creating the pieces
I had the opportunity to photograph the hats in natural sunlight.

The Next Phase

I'm passionate about preserving her legacy and sharing it with others. The goal is to continue to make modern interpretations that draw on the original designs. By mixing materials and techniques with contemporary elements. I'm striving to create something unique and memorable.
